At Currie Barracks Dental, we are pleased to be able to offer Invisalign as a possible treatment alternative to traditional metal braces for certain cosmetic and functional cases. Invisalign is a system that uses clear retainers to move your teeth to the desired position. These retainers are clear and so thin that they're barely visible to others, and as such a nice aesthetic alternative to metal brackets.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign can be used to treat many forms of crowding, spacing, rotation, bite concerns (malocclusion), overbite or underbite. Brushing and flossing are also much easier as the retainers are removable, so eating and cleaning can be accomplished as normal simply by taking out the retainers for a few minutes. The ease of cleaning will help promote a clean healthy smile during and after your Invisalign treatment.
Invisalign is also a great option for late teen and adult patients who want to make orthodontic changes to their teeth, but without the traditional bracket-and-wire appearance of traditional orthodontics. Invisalign offers those patients a discreet and effective way to make alignment corrections for health or cosmetic reasons.
How Does Invisalign Work?
We start by taking some very accurate impressions of the teeth as they are. Those impressions are used to digitally design your smile, so we can decide how we want your teeth to look after treatment. Then we bond some small white "buttons" to your teeth (same as white composite filling material and so also invisible). The retainers then fit over your teeth and we slowly move them into place by changing the retainers sequentially every two weeks (you are given a few aligners at a time and provided with easy instructions).
Your dentist will check up on you every six weeks or so to ensure excellent progress. That way, if any adjustments to your treatment need to be made, we can keep you on track!
How Long Might Invisalign Treatment Take?
Most cases will take about 10-12 months, but timelines can range from 4-24 months, depending on the complexity of your case and your needs. Following the instructions exactly will help your treatment stay on track. You should wear your aligners about 22 hours each day for the best results.
As with traditional orthodontics, wearing a retainer after treatment is essential to maintaining your new smile. Without an orthodontic retainer, your teeth may relapse to their original position and your treatment will need to be repeated.
