Whitening / Bleaching
There are many marketed options for bleaching (or whitening) your teeth. There is a different application for each option and it’s important to discuss these options with one of our dentists before experimenting with options, even over-the-counter options. Professional teeth whitening offers many advantages over the store-bought varieties. You can achieve predictable, positive results under the supervision of one of our experienced dentists.
In-Office Same Day Treatments
There are many different ways to quickly get drastic teeth bleaching results. Various treatments employ lights to activate the ingredients that leach stains from deep in your teeth. No matter what is claimed, these treatments will often be accompanied by some sort of sensitivity. If you need whiter teeth in a couple hours for a special occasion, or you feel you won’t comply with nightly trays this may be the best option for you. It is important to observe a strict “white diet” after this type of bleaching. Also you will typically be sent home with custom teeth bleaching trays to maintain your results.
You will see a drastic difference at first but it’s common for shades to “stabilize” and rebound slightly. If all instructions are followed the results should last for a few months, but it all depends on your habits. Tobacco use, drinking coffee, tea, or red wine can all affect the longevity of your results.
Take-Home Bleaching (Whitening) Trays
For these options we take impressions and make custom-fit trays for you to take home and use for bleaching your teeth. This option offers some flexibility and should provide less sensitivity than same-day options. Commonly active ingredients in tooth bleach will deactivate over the course of a half hour or hour. There are overnight options that also last for 6-8 hours. Trace amounts can be swallowed using this method and studies have shown this to be safe.
This method will typically be effective for months after use depending on your diet and habits such as smoking which will stain teeth again. It is perfectly safe to use take home trays 2 or 3 times a year to maintain bright white teeth.
Whitening Strips and Toothpastes
Bleaching teeth follows a linear dosage curve. Even small percentages of hydrogen peroxide will work effectively if used for a longer time. Again diet and smoking can reverse any progress made and render any bleaching method ineffective. Some toothpastes use abrasives to “lighten teeth” which is just removing surface stains. This is also done with “polishing” at a dental hygiene appointment.
Strips can occasionally fit imperfectly, which may bleach the gums. This is totally reversible and will resolve in a couple days, but may cause discomfort. Additionally, placing too much whitening gel in your custom trays can cause gum irritation. Be sure to follow instructions exactly.
